James McDonald served as Able Seaman in H.M.S. Royal Sovereign during the major fleet action that became known as ´The Glorious First of June´. A total of seven Large Naval Gold Medals and 15 Small Naval Gold Medals were awarded for this action.
One other man with this name appears on the Admiralty Claimant´s List, a single clasp award to a Private, Royal Marines, for Syria.
