#78c, 24c Blackish violet, used, especially strong and unmistakable Blackish violet color, condition is better than most with one short perf at left, centered to the bottom left, fine; this stamp is the rarest and most elusive of all the famous shade varieties in 19th Century U.S. stamps, being far more difficult to find than the renowned 1857 Indian red or the1861 Pigeon blood pink; a study of the escalation in catalog value over the last 20 years shows that buyers pay whatever they have to to acquire it because they may not get another chance; 1987 PF certificate.
