#58X2 var., Mobile, Ala., 5c Blue, vertical plate scratch through "O" of "Post", choice single with this variety large balanced margins all around, tied to brown cover marked in ms. "C S Nitre & Mining Bureau/Official Business" (Nitre is Potassium Nitrate used for gun powder) addressed to a Lieutenant in the Engineer Corps, Army of Tennessee near Dalton, Geo., stamp tied by a beautifully struck "Mobile/Ala/Dec 18 1861" c.d.s., bottom backflap missing, otherwise very fine and handsome cover; a most interesting and rare usage of an military official business cover with a scarce plate variety.
