When the Arabs reconquered Carthage in 698 they began to strike coins in the Byzantine style, as these were recognised locally. The two imperial figures represented are those of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius and his son Heraclius Constantine.
The legends express Muslim relgious formulae written in an abbreviated form of Latin. The obverse legend starts 'in the name of the Lord,' the equivalent to the Arabic bismillah.
The reverse legend continues the Islamic kalima: 'There is no god except God (Allah), he is alone with no partner'
