Borneo Prisoner of War Mail
Incoming Mail
1944 (23 Mar.) GB 3d. "prisoner of war post/service des prisonniers de guerre" card to Private Ben Gold, Borneo Camp, showing red British censor h.s. and, on reverse, violet arrival censor chop and red seal of Kubo; the card with some minor faults. Photo
Note: Bennie Gold was evacuated from Singapore on H.M.S. Kedah before the surrender and was eventually captured in Batavia. In September 1942 he was taken to Singapore and, after a short stay, was transported to Kuching where he arrived on 13 October 1942. He worked in the camp office, under the supervision of Kubo, keeping Japanese Army cards maintained for each prisoner. He was selected for this task as he spoke Yiddish and could understand the Dutch and Malay spoken by the Japanese.
