1804 (26 Feb.) entire letter, headed "Ship Ganges", addressed to "William English Esq late, Surgeon in the Honourable Comp's Service, Humber Bank, Hull" from Nat Turner, believed to be the Ship's purser (private circular cachet in red on reverse) and showing, on reverse, London transit datestamp (8.8). The contents of the letter describe the Battle of Pulo Aura in the Straits of Malacca where a convoy of East Indiamen drove off and chased a powerful French naval squadron under Admiral Linois. Photo
