1898 (31 July) envelope to London, headed "From 4355 A.W. Martin 1st Lincoln Regiment Soudan", marked "Nile Expedition Soudan" and "Army of Occupation", bearing 1898 Camel 2m. and 3m., both tied by bi-lingual "darmali/s.p.s." c.d.s. and showing, on reverse, Wadi Halfa (5.8) and Alexandria (12.8) datestamps; small imperfections though unusual in not being countersigned by the Commanding Officer which, from early in 1897, did not appear to be compulsory to achieve the concession. Rare with very few stamped soldier's covers recorded from this expedition. Photo

Note: Having fought at the successful battle of Atbara on 8th April 1898, Kitchener sent his troops into summer camps along the Nile to prepare for the final advance on Omdurman. The 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment spent only seven days at Darmali before marching to a village a mile and a half north, where they remained until August. Darmali was the base camp for the build-up of supplies for Kitchener's advance.
