Note: Military records show that Private Smith served with the 5th Fusiliers in Mauritius between 1846 and 1857. It is interesting to note that a cover from a Corporal in the same regiment appeared in the 1993 Kanai sale in Zurich. Written i 1856, it bears an intermediate impression 1d. dull vermilion and was posted after the introduction of the Indian Army soldier's 1d. rate in 1855. Additionally, these two covers are both signed by the same C.O. - Lieutenant Colonel (later Colonel) Grey.
