The Postal History of the Province of Otago

Mail via San Francisco
1872 (29 Nov.) envelope (flap missing) from Oamaru "via San Francisco" (deleted) to France, bearing 1864-67 3d. lilac and 1871 6d. pale blue both cancelled "01" and showing "poss.ang.v.suez/alexandrie" c.d.s. (10.2) at foot, the reverse with despatch and several indistinct French c.d.s.; a little aged in places though an unusual franking. Photo

Note: At this date there were no English Packets taking mail to Marseilles, the service having been terminated and mail was being sent via Brindisi. Although this cover is endorsed via "San Francisco" it appears to have been crossed out and it certainly did not go by this route.
The December mails left Sydney on 31 December 1872 and Melbourne on 2 January 1873 aboard the "Bangalore". The mail reached Galle on 22 January and Suez on 8 February. The Southampton mail was transferred to the "Massilia" at Alexandria on 11 February and the "via Brindisi" mails went on the "Poonah" on 10 February
