Mail via Suez and Southampton to the United Kingdom
1859 (7 Jan.) envelope to Scotland, bearing 1857 1/- on blue paper bisected vertically and cancelled by indistinct "15" obliterator, despatch and arrival (1.4) c.d.s. on reverse; fine and very rare. S.G. 6a, £26,000. Photo

Note: From March 1857 a new Australian Packet service via Suez was announced in the New Zealand Gazette and new postal rates were charged with 6d. for the first ½ ounce. For the first time, payment in New Zealand covered the total charge, which included delivery in the United Kingdom. This was a monthly service between Melbourne, Sydney and Suez. Mail was transported to Alexandria though the Mediterranean via Gibraltar and Southampton
