Ship Letter Mail Featuring Early Handstamps
1849 (6 Dec.) envelope "Ship Letter Prepaid" from Whitby to "Kawhia Waikato", rated "1" (deleted) and "Pd 8d" in maroon ink, showing Whitby, York (5.8), London (6.8), London Ship Letter (6.8) and Nelson (30.12) c.d.s. spread across the cover, Nelson "2" handstamp below and, above all of them, a superb strike of the exceptionally rare "p.o. otago,/Dec 6, 1849." datestamp, manuscript "Missent" in red ink at left. A fine and remarkable cover with all postal markings appearing on the face. One of only four examples of this datestamp recorded. Photo
