1840 (17 Mar.) entire letter from Capt. Frederick Bush of the Whaling ship Columbus at "Port Otago" reporting to the owners Gibbs and Jenny at Fairhaven, Mass., rated "14½" and showing "ship" handstamp and New London, Ct. c.d.s. (13.7), both in red on face; split between top of face panel and fold. The earliest recorded letter from Port Otago in private hands. Photo

Note: It is believed that this letter was carried to the United States by the American Whaler "Superior" which was anchored in Otago Harbour in March 1840
