KC (double letter K), good to very large margins all round, tied by black Maltese Cross to entire letter, dated 20 Feb. 1841, addressed (unusually in blue) to Chelmsford, crisp double ring Bungay d.s. on reverse; fine and showing first month of use of the black Maltese Cross. Photo

Note: The writer of the letter was John Charles (1783-1853), printer and pioneer of the movement of cheap and good literature for the million. He suffered imprisonment in 1836, on account of a conscientous refusal to pay church rates.
