River Niger Travelling Post Office
Down River
1908 unstamped envelope to Paris, with letter headed "Riviere Niger 6 Mai", showing Forcados transit d.s. (7.6), "T" h.s. and French Postage Due 50c. (2). This cover has been 5 weeks in transit and, with no Northern Nigeria stamps, a place of origin is indicated well beyond the point where the River Niger flows from Dahomey into Nigeria. Photo
Note: In accordance with the 1885 Berlin Treaty, flotillas of French barges travelled upstream in the rainy season, with supplies from the coast. By 1908 the route was used infrequently owing to progress inland of the Dahomey railway. During the period of active use of these river routes to neighbouring territories, mail would be bagged and sealed while in transit and covers transported singly and so marked would be rare.
