North American Land Company, certificate for [one] share, 179[5], no.1309, signed by Robert Morris as President, black printing with scrollwork at left, some ink burning on signature and top edge, otherwise almost extremely fine.
Robert Morris (1734-1806), a wealthy merchant who also signed the Declaration of Independence and financed the Bank of North America, founded the North American Land Company with partners James Greenleaf and John Nicholson. The company held 6,000,000 acres of real estate in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky, and was formed to sell stock secured by the land in order to repay the founders debts. The company failed as the land market collapsed, and Morris and his partners were ruined, each ending up in Debtors Prison.
