Early Letters and Handstamps
Maritime Mail
1837 (1 May) entire letter to Naples, showing oval-framed "malta/D.R. dei Pacchetti a Vapore", rated "20" (overstruck by framed "corretta" in red) and "40", and showing oval-framed "Posta/Giornal" in red. Very rare and the only example we recall seeing. Photo

Note: This Royal State run line, operated by the navy between Palermo and Marseilles, via Naples, had agents in Genoa, Livorno and Malta. It was intended as an alternative to the Marseilles-Genoa-Livorno-Naples-Messina-Malta line but proved to be a dismal failure and was wound up on 15 May, 1839.
