1923 Bandit Post
1923 (22 May)(c.) British official envelope to R.H. Rowlatt, Esq., one of the hostages on Pao Tzu Lu. Sent by B.G. Tours, the British representative in Tsaochwang, bearing 10c. "bandit post" stamp type 1b. The receiver's name has been crossed through and readdressed, in pencil, to R.W. Davis, Esq, North China Daily News & Herald Ld, Shanghai with "Kindly forward". Hand carried back to Shanghai, either by one of the correspondents or with their despatch for the newspaper. There is a heavy vertical crease which results in some paper splitting and there is some minor staining. This is the only cover recorded which was conveyed both into and out from the bandits' stronghold. This is the first public appearance of this important example of the evocative Bandit Post. It was acquired from R.W. Davis by John Brooke of Davis & Brooke, a close acquaintance, and has remained in the family since then. Photo
