Large Dragons
Cover
1884 (17 June) envelope to Germany bearing, on the reverse, thick paper 3ca. brownish red tied by a light strike of "customs/kiukiang" despatch c.d.s. type A in red with a second strike alongside; neat Customs Shanghai (19.6), Hong Kong (24.6) and Kiel (1.8) arrival c.d.s., the latter tying the adhesive. Sent via the British Post in Shanghai, the face with a pair of Hong Kong 5c. blue cancelled by a single strike of the "S1" obliterator in black with neat Shanghai c.d.s. alongside. The cover exhibits some light staining caused by the glue on the flap and there is a small filing hole in the lower corner, a truely remarkable cover with all the postmarks being so crisp. It is thought that there are only three covers with the Large Dragon cancelled by the red Kiukiang datestamp. Unusually this card has not been opened out. A rare and highly important cover. Holcombe Certificate 1996). Photo
