Henry VIII (1509-47), third coinage 1544-47, Sovereign, 12.87g, Tower mint, type I large module flan at 198.58 grains, m.m large lis, king with larger face seated on straight sided throne, Tudor rose below, rev. crowned shield with lion and dragon supporters, hr monogram in cartouche below (Schneider 607, pl. 56; Stewartby p.519; Whitton dies A/a, Pl. III; N.1823; S.2289), light wear to high points otherwise an exceedingly well preserved piece with much facial detail in evidence, extremely fine, this piece of the highest rarity and with a famed pedigree dating back 160 years now available at auction for the first time since the 1950 V. J. E. Ryan sale

Aside from this type I large module Sovereign, Ryan also owned three type II Henry VIII third coinage Sovereigns, cf lots 139, 140, and 141. So exceptional was the hammer price for this piece at £385 that it exceeded the total hammer prices of all three type II Sovereigns (£78, £135, and £80 respectively) with an excess of £92.
