Auction: 14006 - Ancient, British and Foreign Coins and Commemorative Medals
Lot: 1054
Brazil, José I (1750-77), Peça (6,400-Reis), 1756 R, laureate bust right, rev. crowned arms (F.65; Gomes 43.06), very fine
The old (undated) hand written note that accompanies this coin has some curiosity value.
"The Portuguese Gold Coin, which you bought from Mr Emil Pingold, is one of a number found amongst others in a small bag dug up in Hayti a few years ago & supposed to have been buried there about 1795 when Hayti commenced her struggle for independence from French rule.
This specimen, from what I can gather, is variously styled, a Five Milreis Gold Piece, a half Peça, Half Dubloon, Nine Dollars & sometimes a Joey.
Dealers say that the value of the gold is 36/-.
On one side is the Arms of Portugal (Algarve) surmounted by the Royal Crown, - on the obverse the head of the King + date together with the legend '...D.G. Port. et Alg. Rex.'-
The edge looks as if double milled, but, examined under a magnifying glass, will be found to be laurel leaves in bud."
