France, François I (1515-47), Ecu d'or de Dauphiné, 3.40g, Romans, franciscvs dei gra fracor rex, two crowned Rs, one at the start of the legend in place of the usual cross, the other at the end of the legend, point below the second letter, the arms of the Dauphiné, sun above, rev. xps vincit xps renat xps inperat (the usual reading for this mint), crowned R at start of legend, atelier letter pl (liés) at end of legend, point below second letter, cross fleury (cf Ci.182; cf Dup.782; F.354; cf. Laf.645), about extremely fine, a very rare variety with the mint mark additionally placed in the initial position on the obverse in error
