(x) Gupta Empire, Samudragupta I (c.335-370), AV Dinar, 7.51g, king and queen type, Chandragupta I standing facing his wife Kumaradevi, both nimbate, Brahmi legends Kumaradevi left, Chandragupta right, rev. Lakshmi seated facing on lion lying right, holding a diadem and cornucopia, tamgha left, Brahmi legend Licchavayah right (cf. Bayana hoard plate I, 1-10; BMC Guptas plate III, 2-3; MAC 4792), some obverse porosity, very fine
Coins of this type are believed to commemorate the marriage of Samudragupta's father Chandragupta I with the Licchavi queen Kumaradevi. As the Licchavis were an important clan it is believed that this marriage facilitated the subseqent acceptance of the Gupta dynasty as the legitimate rulers of vast areas of northern India.
