Romanus III, Argyrus (AD 1028-1034), AR Miliaresion, 1.88g, Constantinople, the Virgin, nimbate, standing facing, holding the nimbate infant Christ in her arms, M - in field, APENE COI OVAINE, rev. OC HIKE ANTA KATOPOI, Romanus standing facing wearing loros and crown with cross, holding long patriarchal cross and patriarchal cross on globe (cf. Sear 1822, DOC 3, BN 1 and BMC (Romanus IV), 7), in an accompanying letter Peter Donald accepts the authenticity of the piece despite its low weight, citing Sabatier pl.L, 14 and Grierson in DO. Vol III p.272, who knew of another smaller example in the ANS. The Sabatier piece is described as being gold, but Grierson felt sure it was gilt. This piece has some surface erosion which may go some way to explaining its low weight. Extremely rare, good fine to almost very fine
