Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Penny, 1.10g, hammer cross type, Derby, Leofwine, crowned bust right with sceptre, +EARDPARD RE, rev. +LIOFPINE ON DIRIII, short cross voided, each limb terminating in an incurved segment of a circle, (N.828; S.1182), the legends soft in areas, pleasantly toned, good surfaces, and a pleasing bust, very fine

This piece was originally attributed to the mint of Dereham, Norfolk by the Duke of Argyll. Although this mint has since been discredited, the coin does display several anomalous factors, i.e. blundered regnal title, hand-etched cross ends, crude reverse legend, and, of course, the mint signature DIRIII. The cataloguer felt it necessary to discount Dernt/Dyr as a possible attribution as the mint signature could be read as DIRYN under magnification, the type would correspond with known specimens, and a Leofwine struck both at Norwich and Thetford mints during this type. In addition, there is a small pellet in the left cross terminal as seen in this type at Norwich. Die duplicates do, however, exist with the mint signature clearly reading DIRBI and are thus given to Derby.
