Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, 1.52g, first hand type, London, Godwine, diademed bust right, rev. +godpine m¯o lvndn., manus dei impaled with cross issuing from cloud dividing alpha and omega, (c.f. Hauberg, 1974, No.40; N.766 var; S.1144var), weakness to drapery, manus dei / cross clearly struck, nearly very fine, possibly unique and a very interesting piece which may be of Scandinavian manufacture

The representation of Stigmata appears to be unknown in the domestic late Anglo-Saxon coinage. This moneyer also struck the Benediction hand type at London which also shows a similar cross struck on the sleeve of the manus dei. However, there are similar examples known in the contemporary Danish coinage which clearly show the cross struck on the hand. With the movement of dies known to have occurred between England and Scandinavia, it is feasible that this seemingly official obverse die could have ben paired with a fabricated reverse die and struck on the continent.
