Auction: 14005 - Ancient, British and Foreign Coins and Commemorative Medals
Lot: 565
Aquitaine, time of Edward III (1327-77), black coinage, c.1350, AE Double Guyennois, 1.17g, uncertain mint, inscription in two line, [..]i / tan, signs of inscription around, [...]ra[..], rev. inscription, cross calvary within inner circle, cross with fleur de lis on tip of upper arms (Elias-), unlisted in Elias and certainly an Aquitanian issue, extremely rare
This type copies the French Double Parisis of Philip VI which read fran / corv in two lines in the reverse field. This is replaced on this coin by what appears to be aqi / tan so would seem to be an issue of Edward III and Duke of Aquitaine imitating the black coinage types of Philip VI.
