provenance
Found at Elkesley, Notts., 2012
Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2012.0178
Until this coin was found the first type of William I was unknown for Leicester. The mint names for Chester and Leicester are very similar at this time. However, this coin can be unambiguously attributed to Leicester as the mint signature contains a letter r which the Chester mint signature does not. Additionally the moneyer Aegelric is recorded for several issues of Edward the Confessor, including the last issue (pyramids type), for Leicester whilst a moneyer of this name is unknown for Chester.
