India, Republic, 8-Coin Proof Pattern Set, 1949, by Patrick Brindley, Cu. Ni. Rupee, obv. the lion capital of Asoka with government of india around, rev. man winnowing wheat, ½-Rupee (2), metal-worker pouring molten metal, with foundry building behind and plain background, ¼-Rupee, rev. miner seated left holding pick, 2-Annas (2), peacock facing with tail extended, peacock facing left, Anna, rev. water buffalo standing right, AE Pice, rev. two sheaves of wheat, some with minor handling marks, the Pice with a small obverse stain, otherwise as struck, an extremely rare and historically important set (8)

From the collection of the late Patrick Brindley, chief engraver for the Government of India's mints at Calcutta, Bombay and Hyderabad 1947-1961.
Brindley designed this trial coinage, as well as India's first coinage as an independent country, and most notably the 'Ashoka Pillar' design chosen by Mohundas Karamchand Gandhi for the obverse of the new Republic's coinage.
