Lot: 56

#228, 30c Black, essentially perfectly centered amid extravagantly large margins that certainly qualify as jumbo for this value, marvelously bright and fresh overall, with prooflike color and impression on immaculate paper, pristine o.g., n.h., an extremely fine gem in every regard.[cr][lf][cr][lf]In our opinion, the Thirty Cent value, along with the Ten Cent value, are the two most challenging denominations from the 1890-93 Small Bank Note series to find in premium never hinged condition. Typically neither is found well centered and almost always with tight margins. If found with decent centering and margins they are invariably hinged. Such is not the case with the remarkable stamp offered here from the ""Westchester"" Collection. This stamp boasts lavishly large margins unlike any other example we have seen, as well as being nearly perfectly centered within them - and to top it all off, it is never hinged. In the PSE Population Report this is one of only two never hinged examples to grade 95J, with one grading higher (98). Among this very select trio, the example offered here possesses far larger margins than the other two. A condition rarity for the finest collection.[cr][lf][cr][lf]Accompanied by a 1990 PF certificate and a 2005 PSE certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $12,700.00 as 95 and $33,400.00 as 98); as mentioned above, one of only two to have been awarded 95J status, with one grading slightly higher (98); ex-Morri Estimate US$ 12,000-14,000
