JKD ‘Water’ Concept Hand Drawing by Bruce Lee Be like water… This original and historic hand-drawn teaching illustration by Bruce Lee delineates one of the foundational principles of Bruce Lee’s revolutionary martial arts system, Jeet Kune Do. It features the inscriptions “Motion of water-to fit, to accomodate (sic) itself to (stone)” and “Water slips out as a result of the grasping-the faster the grasp, the fast it slips”. The document is also 'signed, ‘Property of Bruce Lee’. In his fascinating interview with Canadian talk show host, Pierre Berton, on December 9th, 1971, Bruce expands his teaching on water and its application to the martial arts, as follows: “Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend”. Bruce Lee combined deep philosphical insight with his teaching and practice of the martial arts. His extraordinarily fluid and yet powerful range of movements were the result of the application of his observations on the movement of water. This personal illustration is an article of genuine historical significance. Ex Taky Kimura
