Note: A typewritten note, possibly from De la Rue (included with this lot) states, "Following an invitation for competitive postage stamp designs we submitted the under-mentioned eleven designs on Sept. 6, 1922. A - D are in the same size as the existing series, whilst E - K in the larger size we pointed out would not fit the present watermark paper. On Nov. 10, 1922 the P.M.G., Pretoria wrote back that the designs F.G.&J. had been purchased for £30 and this prize money would follow. On Jany. 23, 1923 a further tender was submitted for postage and fiscal stamps as designs submitted in 1922 and chosen by the P.M.G. and exhibited, both in one and two colours, and in English and Dutch. Nothing materialised."
