Italy, Venice, Marin Faliero (1354-55), Ducato, 3.47g (F.1222; P.1), very fine, one of the rarest Ducats of the series

Marin Faliero, fifty-fifth Doge of Venice, led a badly organised coup d'etat against his home city, and was beheaded. His coinage is rare partly because of his short and ignominious reign, but also because the Venetian State pronounced a 'damnatio memoriae' and all signs of his rule were destroyed.
