The defeat of the Ottoman army before Vienna on 12 September 1783 was celebrated throughout Europe, and has since been regarded as the turning point in the centuries long war between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire. The victory was secured by the combined forces of the Emperor, the Imperial Princes, and the Polish king Jan Sobieski, who arrived before the city with an army of over 20,000 troops.
