Bechuanaland
British Bechuanaland
1891 (Nov.) Cape of Good Hope Overprinted "British/Bechuanaland" Reading Up
1d. carmine-red reconstructed marginal block of six formed by three horizontal pairs, the top pair, marginal with plate number "7", variety one without overprint, the centre pair variety "Bechuanaland" omitted and the pair at foot with almost all of "Bechuanaland" omitted, all three pairs showing part albino impressions of the overprint, the upper pair with the stamps remaining unmounted, the two other pairs with large part original gum; the varieties caused by a folding under of part of the upper right corner with some resultant creasing which should not be considered a caveat. A remarkable accomplishment to bring these three pairs together, which were last offered together in 1900. Undoubtedly one of the most important items of Bechuanaland philately. B.P.A. Certificates for the top pair (2008) and for the middle pair (2003) which is also represented by a Philatelic Foundation Certificate (1991). S.G. 31a, 31c. Photo

Note: In the Tamsen sale of May 1900 lot 196 comprised a block of twelve of the 1d. value described as "on two only the surcharge "British" appears, and one is entirely without surcharge, rare". The marginal pair without overprint has not appeared at auction since that time. The crease only affected a vertical strip of four stamps from the upper right corner of the pane. The whereabouts of the pair from row four is unknown and may not have survived

provenance:
Tamsen, 1900, for the upper pair
Holmes, 1981 and Sir Gwaine Baillie, 2005 for the middle pair
Dale Lichtenstein, 1991 for the lower pair
