R.M.S. Appam left Dakar on 11th January 1916 with the West African mail. She was captured by the German cruiser "Moewe" and sailed to the United States. The passengers and mail were released and taken to Falmouth. The mail arrived in London on 18th February 1916
On 16th January the German raider "Möewe" attacked the armed merchant SS Clan Mactavish, carrying a cargo from NZ to UK, 120 miles from Funchal. 17 of the Clan Mactavish's crew were killed and the Captain and two gunners plus some Lascars were retained by the "Möewe" to help work the ship until it arrived in Germany and were then interned. The remainder were put aboard the SS "Appam", which sailed the following day for the USA, the "Möwe" returning to Germany.
