Alexander II (1214-49), coinage in his own name, c.1235, Penny, 1.16g, Roxburgh, Alain Andreu, crowned bust right, cross tipped sceptre before, alexander rex, quatrefoil of four pellets at end of legend, rev. retrograde legend, alain andrev on r (Burns -; S.5035), a little weak on bust, light crimping, dies apparently unrecorded, most unusual with the retrograde reverse, very fine, extremely rare

This coin seems to be struck from an unrecorded pair of dies and has features that make it distinctive in relation to other examples of this rare issue. Burns listed seven examples of this short cross issue in the name of Alexander II from Roxburgh. Of these he noted one (Burns 70a) as having a retrograde legend on the obverse. Where the plates in Burns show the sceptre clearly all are tipped with three pellets rather than a cross as on this coin.
