This coin seems to be struck from an unrecorded pair of dies and has features that make it distinctive in relation to other examples of this rare issue. Burns listed seven examples of this short cross issue in the name of Alexander II from Roxburgh. Of these he noted one (Burns 70a) as having a retrograde legend on the obverse. Where the plates in Burns show the sceptre clearly all are tipped with three pellets rather than a cross as on this coin.
