Straight-line Hongkong
1881 (2 June) entire lettersheet from Shanghai to Bombay "per Str. ´Khiva´" bearing 1863-71 8c. dull orange cancelled by "B62" and tied by a straight-line "hong kong" in red capital letters, faint Bombay arrival on reverse (17.10); the ink has soaked into the paper and the adhesive with trimmed wing margin, nevertheless a good example of this marking. The reason for this handstamp is not clear, however, this cover is from a Treaty Port so should have been cancelled by the Shanghai c.d.s., there are no other transit datestamps, suggesting this is either a loose letter, or carried privately to Hong Kong and mailed there (though it should have a despatch datestamp).
