Lieutenant-Colonel Albert William Waite, the grandfather of Squadron Leader J.M. Griffith-Jones, D.F.C., Lieutenant D.L. Griffith-Jones, and Mr. M.A. Griffith-Jones, born September 1857; enlisted in the 3rd (King's Own) Hussars, March 1877; Commissioned into the 10th Royal Hussars as Riding Master, with the rank of Lieutenant, September 1890; served on the Staff during the Boer War, November 1899 to September 1900; Appointed Riding Master, Royal Military College, Sandhurst, with the rank of Major, September 1902, in which post he authored A Few Useful Notes on Horsemanship; retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, September 1912. In 1916 he was appointed a Military Knight at Windsor, a post he held until his death in 1941.
