1662 Sergeant John Williams, born Edinburgh, 1817; enlisted in the 6th Foot, December 1838; transferred to the 40th Foot, April 1842; served with the Regiment during the Gwalior Campaign; promoted Corporal, July 1853; Sergeant, April 1854; awarded Long Service & G.C. Medal; discharged, May 1860, after 21 years and 144 days with the Colours.
