David I (1124-53), period A, c.1136-c.1141, Penny, 1.37g, as type XV of Henry I, Carlisle, Erebald, crowned facing bust half right, sceptre to left, davit[rex], rev. +erebald[on ca]rd., quadrilateral with incurved sides, lis on each point, over cross fleury (N.910; S.5001), test cut, crease, good surfaces, fine, extremely rare, the first coin listed for the Scottish coinage Estimate £ 2,500-3,500 provenance Found near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, 2008 Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2012.0162 Carlisle was under Scottish rule from 1139, when Stephen ceded Northumberland and Cumberland to David I, until 1157 when Malcolm IV surrendered them back to Henry II.
