Auction: 12023 - World Banknotes
Lot: 1387
California and Salt Lake Mail Line, $50, manuscript date 3 February 1871, serial number 537, no place of issue thus presumably Salt Lake City, uniface, blue with ´FIFTY´ protector printed in red at centre, guarded stagecoach at centre, armed Indian at right, pastoral scene at left, manuscript signatures of Smith low left and Brodman low right(Rust Mormon and Utah Coin and Currency fig.107, p. 96 for the Sacramento issue, see also Ford VI), probably a blank unissued example filled in at a later date than the issue. In 1858 the US Government awarded George Chorpenning the contract to carry the mail between Salt Lake City and Sacramento prior to the coming of the railroad. The trip took an average of 16 days, subject to ´hostiles´ and the cost of each letter was 10 cents. An original good fine and an exceptional rarity
