Great Britain Crimean War 1854 (23 Oct.) unstamped envelope from London to Assistant Surgeon Edmund Lawless, "British Prisoner of War, Riazan, Russia", rated "4/3" and showing Charing Cross d.s. partly crossed by "3 1/2/groschen" h.s., the reverse with "aus england per aachen" c.d.s. (24.10). Rare being one of only a handful of covers addressed to British P.O.W.´s in Russia during this war. Photo Estimate £ 2,200-2,500 Note: Assistant Surgeon Lawless was serving on H.M.S. "Tiger" when, on 12 May 1854, it ran aground in fog near Odessa, was set on fire and sunk. Lawless was among the 24 Officers and 201 Seamen and Marines taken prisoner by the Russians on the same day.
