Charles I, Civil War coinages, Worcester, 1644-45, Halfcrown, 13.86g, m.m. castle/-, King, crowned and holding sword, riding left, grass below, small w between legs of horse, rev. crowned, garnished square topped shield (Brooker 1142 -this coin; N.2587; S.3096), toned, an exceptional example of this issue, said to be the finest known by Brooker, almost extremely fine Estimate £ 4,000-5,000 provenance Bt. Spink, April 1980 J.G. Brooker, Charles I collection acquired by Spink 1978 V.J.E. Ryan, Glendining, 22 January 1952, lot 1298 L.E. Bruun, Sotheby, 18-22 May 1925, lot 792 E. Rashleigh, Sotheby, 21 June- 1 July 1909, lot 961 Brooker noted this as ex Wheeler and Vincent collections, but this coin is not the Worcester Halfcrown in these sales.
