Lot: 903

Elizabeth I, Portcullis Money, Eight-Testerns, 26.95g, undated (1600-01), m.m. 0, crowned shield dividing crowned E-R, rev. crowned portcullis (N.-; Prid.1; S.2607A), extremely fine, a fully round and well struck up example, certainly one of the finest known and very rare in this high grade Estimate £ 20,000-25,000 This and the following three coins were purchased as a ´set´ from Spink, February 1978 for £5,500. In his letter offering the coins, Patrick Finn observed ´These pieces were struck at the Tower Mint for the use of the Governor and Company of Merchants of London. They are considered by many to be our first purely colonial issues. Basically they were produced as an attempt to consolidate Britain´s influence in the economic and commercial struggle with other would be colonisers. It is unusual to be able to obtain a complete set since it is the dollar alone which is usually available. I think this is a good opportunity for you to purchase them for the collection since the dollar itself can often command around £3,500 and is actually more common than (the) smaller pieces.´
