Charles I, local issues of the Southern ´Cities of refuge,´ 1647, Cork, AE Farthing, 3.29g, struck on lozenge shaped flan, cork within a circle of pellets, rev. castle within circle of pellets (D.F.331; S.6562A), fine, a good example of this extremely rare siege money issue from the Great Rebellion of 1642-49 Estimate £ 500-600 Cork was one of four towns (the others being Bandon, Kinsale and Youghal) which from the start of the Great Rebellion held out against the forces of the Confederated Catholics. Each town had to issue its own coinage to enable payments to be made. Shillings, sixpences, halfpennies and farthings are known for Cork. Examples of these issues are all extremely rare and the copper coinage rarely survives in good condition. provenance Found near Colchester, Essex, 1997.
