Lot: 452

Mercia, Queen Cynethyrth, wife of Offa, Penny, 1.17g, Canterbury, Eoba, large crude bust right, corn ear behind and over head, eoba before, lozenge o, rev. +cyneðryð regina, uncial m, contraction bar above, pellets in angles within beaded inner circle (Chick 147; CEB 129; N.339; S.909), an uncleaned field find, edge chips, otherwise very fine, very rare Estimate £ 2,000-3,000 This coin belongs to a small group which have this large and crude style obverse. The reverse die is the same as that found on most of Cynethryth´s coins (see Chick 140-147). It is thought that the obverse stylistic difference on this type is due to the die being cut by someone other than the usual highly skilled Canterbury die cutter deployed on Cynethyth´s and Offa´s issues. provenance Found near Torksey, Lincs, August 2011 Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2011.0238
