China 1897 Revenue Surcharges Unsurcharged 3c. red perf.13.7 x 14 in the paler shade associate with this stamp, with thick, crinkly gum, which may not be original; one perf. near top right with trivial weakness. Fresh colour and of fine appearance. This stamp is centred to the right, which is also found on the singles and block of four which are found on the top rows of the perf.15 stamps. This is one of the most sought-after stamps of Chinese philately. Photo Estimate HK$ 600,000-650,000 The unsurcharged stamp is the precursor to the very popular revenue surcharge issues. In 1987, 53 examples were recorded in the book, The Revenue Surcharges China 1897, which does not include this example. A few have surfaced from collections since then. In addition about twenty examples were recently been discovered in China, though these are all toned, and two blocks of six found by Spink in 2008
