China 1897 New Currency Surcharges Large Figures, Wide Setting on First Print 10c. on 12ca. deep orange, pane 4 [20], large part original gum; hinge and small paper adherences on reverse. Very fresh and fine in the distinctive colour of the first printing. An important and highly desirable example of this rare and popular Dowager stamp which must be considered amongst the finest. B.P.A. Certificate (2011). S.G. 55, Chan 54. Photo Estimate HK$ 500,000-600,000 Unused examples of this stamp are among the rarest of the Dowager surcharge issues. All of the used examples are postmarked in either Ningpo or Soochow. The stamps can be placed in twelve original sheets of 25. This gives the total of 300 stamps printed. All the identifiable sheets are from the right hand surcharge pane Numbers recorded Unused 14 Used 51 This stamp originates from the pane which does not have any used examples. For this reason I have nominated this as pane a. The Quintin Tan collection included the stamp from position [15], the stamp here fits perfectly below that example. These stamps in turn join the Kauder block of four (which was lost in a plane crash) A further example from this pane is recorded. Probably from position [23], it has been reperforated along the lower edge of the stamp. Very few examples have been sold by auction in recent years. These include the examples from The Wilson Te collection (2006) and the Quintin Tan collection (2007). Opportuntities to acquire such a fine example are few and far between
