x Transvaal 1877 soldier´s envelope "From 36 Bde/458 Pte. J.H. Beardsell 1/13th. P.A.L.I." at Pretoria to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1877 fine roulette 1d. red on blue (roulettes in places) cancelled "1", showing manuscript "2" at centre, light despatch c.d.s. and Cape Town c.d.s. (23.11). S.G. 122. Photo Estimate £ 2,200-2,500 Note: In 1877-78 the 1st./13th. Regiment was garrisoning Pretoria, Standerton, Middelburg and Lydenburg. In late August 1878 it became part of Col. Rowland´s Column, which fought a largely unsuccessful campaign against Sekukuni. Operations in the Lydenburg district were abandoned in October, and the Regiment then resumed garrison duties at Middelburg and Derby, and patrolling the roads leading to Sekukuni´s country. In January 1879 the Regiment was part of the "Left Column" under the command of Col. Wood which invaded Zululand and Utrecht. They fought throughout the Zulu War, and took part in the final decisive battle at Ulundi on 4th. July 1879
