1865 1 Dollar. PCGS PR64. Until recently, the Seated liberty series for a large part remained dormant amongst the raging bull market, but in recent months, evidence has presented itself that suggests this series may be awakening from its long overdue slumber to claim a deserved piece of numismatic glory. To the collector of proof Seated halves, this date in particular, with a scant original mintage of 500 coins, remains a significant challenge to obtain anything that approaches "nice" condition. This particular example fits the near-Gem billing and then some, as close inspection with a loupe yields only extremely trivial blemishes underneath the often seen veil of iridescent apricot-gold toning. The striking detail is also pronounced throughout, giving the piece a well-rounded appeal.
